World on Fire

I am a retired law school professor. After retiring I took up drawing and painting as a hobby, although I had had no formal instruction in studio art since childhood. Having grown up in Chicago, and having been exposed to great art at the Art Institute, I visited museums and galleries whenever and wherever possible, all over the world. I took a few courses in Asian art history as part of my undergraduate major in Asian studies. I have lived for extended periods in China and Japan.

I have done art in the following genres: still lifes, portraits, landscapes, and abstractions. I have used the following media: soft pastel, oil crayon, graphite pencil, conte pencil, watercolor pencil, watercolor paint, gouache, and acrylic.

I do not make art which is overtly political in nature. I think of art as its own excuse for being. While I do not offer my work for sale, I have gifted it to friends and not for profit institutions. I donated three paintings to the library, which now hang in one of the study rooms.

For about eighteen months during the pandemic, I lived in a state of suspended animation, with few opportunities to socialize with people besides my husband. We did take frequent walks in our neighborhood and talked with other people out walking, we on one side of the street and they on the other side.

The California wild fires, so destructive and yet so beautiful, inspired a series of paintings which I call World on Fire, to express my anguish at the state of the planet. But during the pandemic I also did paintings which simply celebrated the beauty of Nature, with no hint of the world’s troubles. I need to be aware of these problems, but at the same time, I need to retreat periodically into the sphere of the imagination.
